I'm about to enter UMD college park as a freshman and a premed, and I will start off with gen chem 1st semester. I know that a very high GPA and MCAT score is crucial to getting into med school, and I will most definitely try to keep my grades up.
But getting clinical experience and volunteer work is also considered absolutely essential for getting into med school, and as of now, I havent really started doing that, though I just started thinking about an internship next summer (there's still a long way to go with that).
There are people that say to start doing the extra activities ASAP esp for those that havent done so in high school. Then there are to those that say that freshmen shouldnt worry about this stuff during the semesters, and should instead adjust to college and save the clinical and volunteering and research for the breaks. And that I have many years to do this stuff.
So I ask, when should I start doing this, and how much should I do? And should I be worrying now?
When should I do premed volunteer work or research or get clinical experience? And how much should I do??
Well you really can't go wrong with more hours of service and clinical exposure, you have too stand out. Med school is very competitive, the more you have the better you look. If you have time now, than start with your hours.
Best of luck!
