How can I go into medical research - specifically involving technology such as nanomachines and nanobacteria.?

What should I major in? Medicine? Biology? Engineering?

I already have a bachelors in a non-science field.

If I go into medicine, do I have to volunteer in a health setting first, even though I don't really want to work in a clinical setting for a career?
