What degrees do I need to earn in college to become a successful clinical psychologist?

I've researched it, and I'm a bit confused. Can you please list the degrees I should attain in order and how many years it takes? Thanks if you can help.

You have to complete 4 years of college. It can be in Liberal Arts or you can have a concentraion in Psychology. This will give you a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts.

You will then need to be accepted into a Graduate Clinical Psychology program. This usually takes two years. In order to actually get your Phd (Doctorate) you have to sit for an exam.

Those who don't want to go throught the rigers of Doctorate program, can get a Master's in Psychology, Master's in Counseling or Master's in Social Work. Each of these allows a person to practice counseling.
Reply:Ultimately, you need a PhD or PsyD in order to become a clinical psychologist. First, you need to get a bachelor's degree. That normally takes about 4 yrs. Even though you can get your bachelor's degree in any field you choose, you will find it easier to get into graduate programs if you major in psychology, so I highly recommend that you major in psychology. After you get your bachelor's degree, you need to get into a PhD or PsyD program. These programs typically take 5+ years. This includes about 4 years of full time classroom study, and 1 year of an internship (it is normally a paid internship). There is one university I know if that will get you your doctorate degree in 4 yrs instead of 5, but typically, you can expect at LEAST 5 years to get your doctorate.

If your grades from your bachelor's degree are not high enough when you apply to graduate school, you can apply to a masters program instead. After getting a masters, you would then need to go apply to a doctorate program (again, PhD or PsyD).

In total, you need to expect 9 years total of college, but it is worth it.
