Yes, some choose to do research instead of practice. I think the shooting two weeks ago would be an answer, what causes violent antisocial behaviour.

One example I know of is how to make people feel less anxious on airplanes which lead to the introduction of white noise, changing the optics of the windows to help those who are afraid of heights. A lot of companies hire Phd Psych to help improve the appealability of their products, help police forces profile people who commit certain crimes, the list is almost endless.
