I'm about to be a senior at Hopkins (psych major) working on an honors thesis, researched at a lab for the 2 past years, interned at schools for kids with developmental/behavioral disorders, and have good gpa and gre scores. But I'm very worried about grad school, given the 5% acceptance rates and what not. What else should I do to differentiate myself from the pack and standout (that is, be one of those 5% that get in)? If there are any clinical psych PhD students I would love to hear from you! Thanks.
What are my chances of getting into a PhD program in clinical psychology?
I graduated from an APA-accredited Psy.D. school in clinical psych and felt my training was excellent. However, if you want a career primarily in research and teaching, then stick to a Ph.D. program. Sounds like you have a great resume so far, so make sure you get excellent letters of recommendation and apply to many schools, not only the top schools. Have your professors review/edit your application essays and resume. Be yourself, explore why you want to enter this field and what your strenghts/areas of growth are, and let that shine through in your application materials. Also, talk to current grad students in the psych program at your school to get their input. I'm sure they would be gald to assist. Good luck!
Reply:Let me put your mind at ease. I went to a small, private college, but I did do an internship at Hopkins (Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit- same building as the baboons!). I worked with kids for a year and then with people with long-term mental illness for another year before applying. My GPA was excellent; my gre scores were okay.
If you want to improve your chances of admission, look into professional psychology schools. They tend to admit more students, but its not like a psychologist factory. The education is the same, if not better, when compared to other colleges and universities.
