Best universities for PG Pharmacy in US?
Perhaps you can re-test, I'm afraid your looking at 2nd -3rd tier schools. I'd suggest the University of Toledo. If you want to get into a top school, for example USC or Drake, etc... you'll need to do better.

Can Psy.D. doctors still do research?

I know those who go for a PSYD are more focused on clinical practice but can they still do research?

Can Psy.D. doctors still do research?
Yes, some choose to do research instead of practice. I think the shooting two weeks ago would be an answer, what causes violent antisocial behaviour.

Companies also engage Phd Psych in research. One example I know of is how to make people feel less anxious on airplanes which lead to the introduction of white noise, changing the optics of the windows to help those who are afraid of heights. A lot of companies hire Phd Psych to help improve the appealability of their products, help police forces profile people who commit certain crimes, the list is almost endless.

How can I live mo. to mo. w/out a job and weed? (no joke answers please!)?

Whats up guys, I've been making a nice living doing clinical research studies, like they pay $3,000+ if you're in the right ones so its enough to pay a few mo. rent. But basically I'm wondering, how can I set things up (welfare etc. I have issues and have gone to a mental hospital) so I can A. Pay rent B. Get food and C. Smoke ganja. I mean I could continue to put my health @ risk w/ the clinical studies and I have friedns that have done it for years, however, b/c of my issues, I want to have the luxury to be able to smoke herbs again.

P.S. E-bay is good too, but I don't have any suppliers for any non replica products.

Peace yall, no joke answers please.

If it were so easy to live and not work, we'd ALL be doing that. Come on. It's really not possible. You can be self-employed and be a handyman for hire, if you can get yourself out the door.
Reply:We won't make joke answers if you stop making joke questions. Why should you feed on the public purse (welfare) when you haven't contributed anything to society? And by the sounds of things, you don't ever intend to.

Clinical trials career?

How can I go from academic research to getting a job in the clinical trials in the UK? Do many CROs offer traineeships for CRAs or CT monitors?

Clinical trials career?
Hello,

(ANS) I think if you have academic research in, or about pharmaceuticals, or drug research, or another close medical area then you might well have a reasonable chance of moving from academia into trials. Even more so if you have a degree in a related or relevant area.

Any Clinical Psychologists/therapists out there?

I was wondering what kind of job I could get with my education and experience so far. I have an MA in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University, but it is only a 1 yr program without any practicum training. I have tons of research experience at UC Berkeley (undergraduate) and Columbia, but very limited clinical experience (volunteered at a Suicide prevention hotline). Also, I have practically zero work experience.

Ideally, I want to get a clinically oriented position as a case manager, or assistant in a treatment program.

I would appreciate any practical advice on the kinds of positions I would be considered for, and even on the typical salary range I should expect.

My ultimate career goal is to have a private practice as a Ph.D. level psychologist (currently waiting for interviews from programs in NY).

Last thing - I am looking for work in either Manhattan or the San Francisco Bay Area

What do you mean?
Reply:One thing, that you could do, is check with your county civil service department, and ask them, when there is a civil service exam scheduled, in your field..There are many civil service jobs, that will give you the experience, that you will need..It is a very good starting point, and the experience, is invaluable..You can also, check with your state department of civil services..Contact your state representative, and inquire about state exams, which might be coming soon..Good Luck..

How much does a humand geneticist with an M.D. make?

I am interested in going into human genetics-either research or clinical-and was wondering what kind of salary I could potentially make.

How much does a humand geneticist with an M.D. make?
Probably more than a non-human geneticist...those poor monkeys are so under paid ;)

Seriously though, if you want to do science research do it because you have an inquisitive mind and not for the money. Expect to be poor for a long time... the money will come eventually but there are far easier ways to make it. You'll need about 8 years of schooling followed by a few years of post doc work (which pays only slightly more than grad school). If you are doing academic research (i.e. at a university) don't expect to make much more than a highschool teacher until you get tenure. If you are doing medical research at a hospital you will fare a little better (cancer is where the money is). If you go into research with only a BSc. or a Masters expect to make very little money (you'd make more as a custodian). You need the M.D. or a Ph.D. (which takes even longer) to earn a decent wage. Sorry to dissapoint you, but I've gone through it and it's tough. Do science because you love it, if you're lucky you'll be able to feed yourself too.

If you want a serious answer, the only ways I can think of are for you to find someone else to support you or figure out how to live a successful life of crime.

And seriously, the way you say that you want the weed because of your issues makes me think you're not taking your own mental health seriously enough. Even if it were legal... even if it were healthy for you... there is no substance that's going to cure your issues or even make them any better. Making them easier to tolerate only makes it easier for you to keep them around rather than learning to make them better.

What are my chances at a Clinical Psychology Ph. D.?

I will be senoir this coming Fall and I am contemplating giving some doctorate programs a shot. I scored a 1260 (670 V + 590 Q) on the GRE. My quantitative score is disappointing and I might retake it. I currently hold a 4.0 through 107 credit hours - although I guess I am not attending a "prestigious" school. I still have some tough courses left (Human Physiology is one of them) so I might graduate with a 3.9 or so, but hopefully no lower than that...

Here are the schools I am considering for a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology:

Texas Tech

Sam Houston State

North Texas

SMU

UT Southwestern

LSU

I will help two faculty members with their research project this coming year and I plan on volunteering to get some "real world" clinical experience. I know how competitive Clinical programs can be, so I kind of feel like this might be too little too late... If there are any grad students out there - How much do you fell this will hurt my chances of being admitted?

Thanks!

What are my chances at a Clinical Psychology Ph. D.?
Well, your scores are certainly in the range that would make youi competative and your experiences are at least slightly above averaae.

A lot will depend on your personal statement, your recommendations and your writing style, I would predict. I would suggest that you carefully pick who writes your recommendation letters. You will want them to stand out from a simple 'yes, I recommend' to something that describes your character...especially your ability to commit and work with people.

Also, you should probably apply to between 10 and 20 different programs with a mixture of difficulty and prestige. I applied to 15 and got selected by four. This allowed me to pick based on cost and support offerred by the university. Some offerred financial support by means of teaching and research opportunities while others did not.

Ultimately I choose to accept an offer from a mid-range school which was in an ideal location I loved with financial assistance.

Best of luck to you. Feel free to write me to ask more detailed questions.
Reply:Well, you have a 4.0 gpa, so that's pretty good. As for Anatomy %26amp; Physiology, that's a class that's extremely different from psychology. There's much more involved and it is muc more difficult. However, as I mentioned earlier, your gpa is good, so don't sweat it.
Reply:I'm currently working on my dissertation in clinical psychology. It's important to know whether the schools you're applying to have a research or a clinical focus. Many of the most prestigious schools don't specialize in training clinicians, so you must decide whether you intend to do psychotherapy or research.

Choose the professors you do research with carefully. Professional reputation crosses campuses, and you don't want your vita to reflect your work with 'doctor sleazebag who does unimportant research while sleeping with clients and undergrad research assistants.'

The number of positions open at a program is often determined by how many professors are in need of new researchers. You aren't typically invited to interview by the program as a whole, but by a specific professor who thinks your vita reflects characteristics that he or she could use in his or her research team. Focus on programs which include professors who are doing work related to your experience or interests.

Finally, remember that most everyone invited to the interviews are considered to be on essentially equal-footing. The interviews are the most crucial part. Many smart-but-profoundly-disturbed students successfully make it through to the interviews, the professors intend to form a cohort of students who have a low likelihood of driving professors or other students crazy over the course of the next 5 or 6 years.

Finally, when I went through the interview process myself, each of the applicants (including myself) had painstakingly reviewed the Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology by Mayne, Norcross, and Sayette.

Good Luck.
Reply:I actually have a MA in Clinical Psych. Its tough getting into clinical phd programs. Most schools only accept like 4 or 5 people out of hundreds of applicants. BUT don't get discouraged you have ALOT to offer. Your already doing al lthe right things that will get you in the door - at least an interview. Most schools look for grades, GRE scores, but also experience. Most times its hard to aquire experience while in school so your already a leg up by doing research this summer. Make sure that the departments you choose to apply to read up research on teh faculty there and try and make a direct connection with at least ONE faculty member. It wouldnt even hurt to email that professor and talk about what they did research on (professors love that) - that way when you do apply and that professor see's your name it will stand up. Ultimately when applying for a doctoral program the goal is to connect with a faculty member there who's research interests match yours. The more experience you gain will help you. Don't sweat it if you get a 3.8 or a 3.9 or a 4.0 thats not everything. I'm sure you will get in. Make sure you apply to ALOT of differnent schools - better to have options when you get in than no options at all. Ok I'll stop rambling about psychology now.. I just love the topic. GOOD LUCK!!
Reply:I'm not a grad, but my adivce to you would be go for it- if you don't try, than you'll never know. and I can almost guarentee you that even if this doesn't work out, you'll appreciate the effort you put into it and learn something about yourself too, good luck.

Does anybody know of a Physician Assistant job in bariatric medicine in Tampa, FL or San Diego, CA area?

I am a PA with more than 8 years of experience. Bariatric experience is limited to 1 year. I am very passionate about this specialty, as well as endocrine and preventative medicine. I am also very interested and active in clinical research.

Does anybody know of a Physician Assistant job in bariatric medicine in Tampa, FL or San Diego, CA area?
I know this may sound odd but have you tried The Town-N-Country Hospitals or Hospitals that have a Bariatric Chamber or do that particular surgery?

I live in Tampa and I think you should just send out your resume to any of the doctors who specialize in this who are in the phonebook and let them know in your letter of application that you are looking for immediate consideration of any future openings.

A lot of doctors probably recruit from USF...try to check the USF oracle or network....call the doctors and ask them if they know any that are hiring.

Can someone please provide some evidence proving that homosexuality is a choice?

I am sure that there is some evidence out there - like maybe a clinical research study published in a peer-reviewed jounal, something like that. The reason I am sure that this evidence exists is because of all the people who keep insisting that being gay is a choice and that's why it is a sin. However, so far the only argument I've heard is: "God created Adam %26amp; Eve, not Adam %26amp; Steve." Which is terribly clever, or was the first time I heard it; but it sort of lacks that certain quality associated with rigorous scientific inquiry.

So, does anyone know where I can find this evidence? Or, if there isn't any actual published data, is there at least some anecdotal evidence? Do you know someone who claims to be gay by choice? For that matter, do you know anyone who is gay?

If you have no evidence, no anecdotes, and don't even personally know anyone who is gay, then where the hell are you getting your information? Did God tell you personally?

Can someone please provide some evidence proving that homosexuality is a choice?
I love all your questions. They're always very insightful and bring out the worst in the teeth bearing bible thumpers.

Reply:Oh Lordy this argument is never going to be settled, so why bother? Even if you shove a peer reviewed journal under my nose telling me I had a choice I would beg to differ.

How do you know when you're cold? You just feel it, right? No one tells you if you are, and you don't have a choice. You just are.

Ask a gay person and they'll tell you there is no choice.

Ask a righteous religious type and they'll swear black and blue it's a choice.

And you know what - if they aren't gay, what do they know?

My "choice" would be to deny my true desires by pretending to be straight - I can guarantee more people would be hurt if I did that.

If people call me a sinner then I can live with that, it's none of their business how I live my life if I'm not hurting them.

But I couldn't live with myself if I tried to be something I'm not. You know why? Because frauds ALWAYS get found out.

So there!
Reply:Okay , many people do not look further than the trees on any subject when it involves politics or religion. So here it is. Do straight people choose to be straight? Then how do homosexuals choose? A true homosexual (not "experimenting" or "wondering" or, "hey i will try anything once") has the sexual preference for the same gender and the opposite sex does not excite them sexually. Just like any type of sexual preference (being heterosexual for instance), it is genetic. Any sexual therapist will tell you this. Especially regarding pedophiles, or people that are into beastiality or any type of socially "deviant" sexual desires - they cannot change what turns them on. Fact.

As for the nature aspect. Many people firmly believe that nature tells us to only have sex with the opposite gender, because our main place here is to propogate and ensure our race will continue. Now, a theory i agree to......

Many different species can reproduce by themselves. Through evolution, and an amazing amount of time, the species have actually formed different sex organs in order to propgate without a partner, or spawn clones of itself. In order for this to work correctly a desire for the same sex must be present before the organs to reproduce are. For instance - you must get turned on before you can ejaculate.

It is very perplexing. Because some women have stated "well, i just hate men, is why i am gay". However if they actually enjoy the sex and are attracted to certain things about women, that is called a "sexual preference". The women may say this because they simply do not know what disgusts them about men, or maybe just one man has hurt them bad - who knows.... The mere fact they can enjoy a woman sexually is another aspect of sexual preference. Therefore they do not like men sexually, and are not turned on by men physically or emotionally. Sexual preference includes more than just outward appearances.

Now, they have broke the human genome.. perhaps in years to come they will let out more information on genetics and DNA composite... so maybe one day they can show the "straight gene" or the "homosexual gene". as for proof, well, there is no proof that someone is born straight either.

As for the religious implication that you stated about adam and steve slogan being clever. That is just another way for people to dislike each other. That actually reminds me of school a little - how kids pick on other kids for being different. And probably created by a person that can rhyme - yay. Point in fact is religious people believe god created everyone. I am sure they think of their god as a mighty god, not one that would make mistakes. So why do many religious people think homosexuality is a mistake or a bad thing? Because to me when there is a religious hate crime, or a religious rant about god, those religious people are stating that one of his creations is wrong. They are actually, in turn, making the statement that god did something wrong. That perplexes me more than "is it a choice" question lol.
Reply:It is not a choice. It's just to it take longer for some people to discover themselves. Think about our teen years when you didn't have your own personality and didn't know yourself. Many times you tried to be someone else that your were not. Now, its a matter of what you like and what makes you happy. You would not buy a BMW just because I like them right? Don't be confused with asking for an opinion. We only ask for opinions when we can not decide between two things that we like. To answer your question lets do the following: Tomorrow will go to the mall and hook with another guy. You must make it a choice tomorrow because theirs an answer that your are looking for. Let me know if you can make that decision tomorrow. Oh, the the day after tomorrow make sure be turn swoitch back into "straight mode". :-) had put some humor in there. I meant no offence.
Reply:i could show you proof if i lived close to you and a zoom lens on my camera but you can always use a mirror.
Reply:Dr. Robert Spitzer helped lead the campaign for removing homosexuality from the American Psychological Society's list of mental disorders. This made him a hero the homosexual community.

He also wrote, "Contrary to conventional wisdom, some highly motivated individuals, using a variety of change efforts, can make substantial change in multiple indicators of sexual orientation." Essentially Spitzer wrote that if you have feelings for the same sex, and you're highly motivated to change, you really do have a choice in who you are, who you become, and how you feel about yourself. His conclusions are based on interviews with two hundred men and women who shifted from homosexual to hetrosexual attraction and stayed straight for five years. Three-fourths of the men and half the women were married after giving up a life of homosexual relationships.
Reply:i view homosexuality as a choice.... all of my gay friends MADE the decision to be lesbian or gay...

as far as the evidence it is a sin in the bible (Genesis) it says

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh."

"You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you."

the bible is the only proof so if your look to continue your search check the bible
Reply:Think about what you're asking for a minute.

You're asking the most fanatical crazy people in the world, to use LOGIC!

That's NEVER going to happen.
Reply:Those who insist it's a choice are inferring (if not openly averring) that homosexual behavior is the result of temptation, and temptation is fed by desire and thus that the activity is both desirable and tempting. Otherwise their belief that choice is the most prevalent cause would make no sense. They would also have to be inferring that all of us, Christians included, are closet homos.
Reply:Animals do have homosexual sex. Homosexuality is not a choice.
Reply:there is none.
Reply:I think of all the people who killed them self because they were so hated and felt they had no choice and no place in this world. It's a good question but you will never get anyone who thinks it's a choice to say they are wrong I'm sad to say. Good question and good point.

Update: By a email I just got it seems I hit a bad note with someone who is straight, this wasn't intended to hurt any-ones feelings.

:(
Reply:The best evidence is that indeed, some people choose it... I dont think it is a choice for all gays, but I know a couple girls who were straight until they'd had it with men and chose to go the other way.

Others, you may not choose who you are attracted to, but you definitely choose who you have sex with.
Reply:Know lots of people who are gay, but not queer.
Reply:Good luck.

From what I've seen here, the likelihood that you'll actually get an answer that isn't relgiously based, or ignorance based, is damned slim.

Several mamalian and avian species have been studied and found to have nearly the same intances of homosexuality as in the human population. The only difference is that we, as humans, have the ability to make informed choices and to communicate those ideas on a wide scale.

Yes, even to sasiate the religious crowd: God did create Adam and Eve. BUT since we are supposedly ALL GOD"S CHILDREN, then God would have ALSO created Steve, Martha, Rene, Chuck, Bob, Micky, Janet and everyone else. So that argument really negates itself when held under a microscope.
Reply:So much anger! Settle down, forgive them their sins, and whack them up against the side of the head!

I chose to be gay at the age of five....at least that is when I first noticed that I was strongly attracted to Buster Crabbe with his shirt off...I had no idea why or how, but I couldn't keep my little beady eyes off the TV! Now if that was a choice, so be it. But I suspect that at that age, it really wasn't a choice, dont' you?

And, confidential to Hip_2_be_cool..sorry, honey, homosexuality runs the same..about 10% in all mammals...you need to get more under your belt info wise before you go spouting to the masses.!!

I am constantly amazed at the ignorance of the general population here..so much hate towards gays...people who do NOTHING to those who hate them...and they call themselves Christians..! Yes, totally amazed.
Reply:well one day when I was about 11 or 12 I decided that I wanted to become someone other people despised, and that I would have to worship a god that thinks I'm an abomination, and that I really wanted to be discriminated against and belittled for who I am. I also chose to a good portion of my life in secret , have a nervous breakdown when I was younger...even tried to commit sucide...It's not easy being gay.....But anyway that's when I decided that I wanted to give it a try and I've never been able to turn it off..I didn't even have to be recruited by someone older..I learned it all on my own. That's why I made my choice to be gay...it was such an easy thing to do. Seriously..you even think choice is a option?

Reply:christians that abuse and discriminate against homosexuals are hypocrites. they should just f*ck off; they have no decent arguements as to why they think homosexuality is immoral. God did not personally tell them, coz God is a made up character in a story book called the bible.
Reply:Seriously, would you even read an article and consider what it said if it was against your belief?

My best friend was gay back in 1981. If I were weird enough, he would have been my "man of honor" or whatever at my wedding. I was the token woman on all the coed soccer %26amp; volleyball teams. I've known many many gays. I also had a coworker/friend that was a lesbian. She presently is married with 3 kids. Obviously there were some choices regarding sex in her life.

I know people who have left the "gay lifestyle". Umm why is it called a "gay lifestyle". It was actually a gay man that told me that it's usually a distant father and overbearing mother.

My gay best friend once was describing a woman at his gym. She was red head with very large breasts. He said once that she could make him straight. He was teased in school and didn't have a strong father figure. He never said he was born that way, but it was the gay men that didn't tease him....they loved him.

BTW I don't hate gays....I hate the gay agenda and having them try to convince the world to support their sin. I just see them as having sexual sin tendencies. I see them as people that are looking for any love they can get.

Also, if someone really wanted to leave the gay lifestyle, they could. Exodus International and I think a group called Crossover can help.

Have you noticed that almost all of the gay answers have cussing, whining %26amp; victim mentalities? All the name calling, too. So classy. I wonder if that is part of the genome.
Reply:well some animals and humans show signs of homosexuality. No one chooses to be gay.I know homosexuals.. even belong to plenty gay straight alliances..Even heterosexuals say it's not a choice. It's only those who do not accept homosexuals that say it's a choice. everyone says they didn't choose it.they say it's a combination of genetics and hormones or one of those two. They studied twins.. a little boy whose 9 shows signs of being gay since he was the age of 2.it isn't a choice.. I like females and males.. and I never chose to be this way. It's how they're made. Anyone who says it's a choice does not know a thing about homosexuals.Studies prove it's not a choice and not nurture.homosexuality isn't a sin because if it was ,there wouldnt' be homosexuals.
Reply:If you were born with a sexual organ i.e. ovary or testes, you were born to do one thing and that is reproduce. A society that is homosexual is a dying society. No future!
Reply:I don't believe homosexuality IS a choice. WHo you have sex with IS, but who you are attracted to sexually is not at all.......It might be influenced by genetics and/or nurring...but that's not a choice.
Reply:I don't understand why everyone is asking questions about homosexuality and trying to find answers people want to hear so they can justify it.. No matter how many questions you ask (like religon), you'll never know the true answer. It's all a matter of people's opinions and that's not the reality.

My opinion on your question is that homosexuality is a choice. However, you DO NOT have control over your inner emotions or who you fall in love with , but you CAN control who you date and marry. Yes, you may think you'll be unhappy or lying to the other person you married, but you know what? If you have faith in God and REALLY believed in Him , everything will fall into place. God helps you with your feelings. You may still not be able to control your emotions, but God is there to help you deal with them and allow you to accept the opposite gender. AMEN!!!

No! It is NOT a choice! I do not know one single gay/lesbian that CHOSE to be gay. I mean, with so many ignorant, hateful bigots out there...some of whom wish to harm (and actually do sometimes) us, some of which want us to have no rights at all...do you think we'd choose? No! we were born the way we are, just like you! when did you CHOOSE to be STRAIGHT? you didn't, did you? of course not, fools...because you were born that way. some of us, due to the hatred that still exists in society, may suppress who we are, live in denial for years until we can't take lying any more and come out later in life.

people who claim to convert or claim to be able to convert us are nothing but liars and brainwashers. you can't change who you innately are.

I bet a lot of the "haters" have never even met one gay/lesbian in their whole life!

quit hiding your hatred behind a Bible...hate is neither a family nor a Christian value. you claim we're sinners, when most of you are worse sinners than you accuse us of being. you're hypocrites! hatred and intolerance IS a choice....IS a learned behavior. assuming the role of God and passing judgment on others is a sin!

and, of course, I don't say all heteros are like this...because the majority aren't. I have many straight friends, who are all very accepting and open-minded. the haters are in the minority. perhaps if they attempted to educate themselves, actually get to know some of us, open their minds, and realize how evil hate is...some may change. but, of course, I'm only being hopeful.

Reply:Read Genesis. God gave ADam and Eve a command. They chose to break that command by choosing of their own free will to disobey. Therefore, all sin is a choice. We cannot blame anyone or anything for our actions.

Is there something wrong with me?

I have been working since the age of 16. I have graduated from College and now am working as a HR Assistant for a Clinical Research Company. The problem is, I have always jumped from one job to another. I seem to find fault in every job I have landed. Currently, I am extremely bored in my position. I have the ability to do a lot more but just do not have enough work. I have approached my Director many times, but still see no results, now I am looking for another job... I just can not be satisfied, are others in my position?

Is there something wrong with me?
I know exactly how you feel. The longest I have stayed with one job has been 2yrs and that is only because i like the people. I always seem to be bored and not have enough work and so I make stuff up to do but theres only so much cleaning and things I can do stuck at a desk all day. Ive asked for more responsibilities but alas nothing usually happens..Hopefully for the both of us we'll find a job that is perfect and things will work out :)

Its a really sad state of affair but ive found that the jobs that pay better require less activities....i mean i could work at say del taco(fast food place) and be busy for 8 hrs and time just flies but make minimum wage or do nothing and sit at a desk all day and make 15/hr....

Reply:You are bored because there is no challenge. Like another answerer suggested...go see a career counselor. They can help determine your personality type and what type of career best fits you. Believe it or not some psychologists are also practicing career counselors. In looking for one make sure they are certified/licensed first. Visiting a career counselor isn't free so it could be rather expensive.

Do physician investigators treat patients AND conduct medical research?

What do physician investigators/physician scientists/clinical researchers/etc. do?

Do physician investigators treat patients AND conduct medical research?
Medical research has several different arms, and physicians can be involved in all of them. Some physicians do treat patients while conducting research, and some focus only on research. Unless you are familiar with the medical research world, the differences can be somewhat confusing.

A physician can be involved in the area of basic medical research, or biomedical research, and would fit the term "physician scientist". It is not uncommon for physicians that work in this field to also have a Ph.D. This research is conducted in laboratories, in academic or industrial settings. In both settings they are usually in charge of a laboratory with staff, with the goal to answer unresolved questions regarding disease and the way how the human body works. More than likely, if a university has a medical school, and an affiliated hospital, you will find some physicians that treat patients with research labs.

Translational research is all about taking a treatment or discovery from "the laboratory bench to the patient bedside". This can also encompass pre-clinical (work performed on animals) research. This is the work that is done before a drug/method is deemed suitable for clinical research trials in humans. In this area as well, physicians can be found.

If a drug/ method of treatment shows enough promise, it will go to clinical research trials. The approval process is somewhat complicated, and too involved to explain in depth here. There are three main phases of clinical research before a drug is put before the FDA for approval, and patient trials generally start either in phase I or II. Often, drug companies outsource these pre-approval studies either directly to a CRO (contract research organization) or indirectly through their drug reps. This shows a lack of biasness on the drug company's behalf. "In house" studies are performed for very close patient monitoring, are usually performed by a CRO, and are conducted under the supervision of a physician at a specific location. If an "in house" study is not needed, the CRO or drug rep will enroll physicians from a targeted demographic (like all pediatric oncologists in the United States) that treat applicable patients as a principal investigator in the clinical research trial. In this way physicians can be investigators. These doctors then recruit patients that meet criteria to use the experimental drug. Evaluations and testing are performed. This recruitment method is also used for safety monitoring, or phase IV clinical research, after a drug has FDA approval.

A clinical researcher is not the same as a physician, as nurses, physical therapists, etc., can be involved in clinical research, and could be considered clinical researchers. The most uncomplicated way to think of the term "clinical", in regard to research, is that it generally focuses on patient outcomes. A clinical researcher is really anyone that has direct or indirect contact with patients and is working with/ looking at a novel treatment or idea, including those in research laboratories.

I hope this answers your questions clearly enough.=)
Reply:Physician investigators treat patients and conduct medical research usually involving clinical trials of new therapies/drugs. Clinical researchers hold PhD's and conduct the vast majority of medical/pharmacological research. I'm not sure about physician scientists. If they are different from the physician investigators, the difference would be that they are involved in basic, medical investigations (not clinical trials) and often hold both and MD and PhD degree.
Reply:They have to get the consent first.

Salary Clinical Psychologist in CA?

I have been researching extensively all over the internet over salary of clinical psychologists in CA.

I have been told by unreliable sources that it averages 110,000 a year but im a bit skeptical.

Is there more money in pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology or entering law school?

Salary Clinical Psychologist in CA?
As an average figure, it probably is a bit high, and psychologists in private practice have only time as a limit on their earnings.

Couple of things I'd like to offer, if money is a significant factor in your career decision, the law school route would be best.

(This is not to be taken personally) To be effective in the field of psychology and mental health, making money needs to be of a secondary importance. Yes, it is important to make a comfortable living, and if you don't do this kind of work because you want to be of service to others, you'll burn out very quickly.

Even though I help people deal with very painful things day in and day out, I look forward to my work, because I know I am making some contribution to my client's well being. I have worked for agencies for as little as $28,000 per year, and have had years that were in the high $80's. Kind of like: build it and they will come, do what you like and the money will follow.

Also for your consideration, Clinical Ph.D. is actually three degrees (bachelor, master, Ph.D.) Law school is only two:

(bachelor's and law school + the bar exam).

Good luck in your decision.
Reply:Salary.com is an EXCELLENT resource for this! Check it out!
Reply:From what I've heard, and I'm in a different branch of the field, Clinical Psychologists make, probably, more like $80k-$100k on average. It'd be higher in the big cities (LA %26amp; SF), because the cost of living is higher, and higher if the person is an entrepreneur, with a wealthy private practice. Lots make less, in settings like community agencies, schools, prisons, and even smaller hospital settings.

Resumes for Research/R&D in Med Devices Industry - should you include publications?

I have some conflicting evidence here. Some people say no, it's business, so throw your CV out and don't include any publications. Other people say, hey, if you are going into a research-oriented field and you have published research, why not include it. I don't know who's right. I opted for compromise, with a 2-page resume with all the basics, and a mention of publications that says, "See appendix." Then I have a page break and a listing of the pubs. I'm hoping to score a job in medical device research (working w/ clinical trials) so if anyone knows anything about that particular niche it would be greatly appreciated. :)

for research or education you should use a CV instead of a resume'.

When is the best time to send Ph.D. applications for admission?

I am a senior undergraduate psychology major and will soon be applying to a few Ph.D. Clinical Psychology programs and one Counseling Psychology program. I took the GRE in May and I can send in complete applications as early as late August. I have always heard that the earlier you send in your applications, the better chance you have of being admitted...

Is this true even if I will be gaining my research experience (assisting a faculty member with a project) and "clinical" experience (volunteering) this coming fall?

Would it be best for me to wait to send in my applications after I have some of this research/clinical experience or go ahead and send in my applications as early as possible?

My stats are:

GPA: 4.0 (through 114 credit hours)

GRE: 1260 (V 670; Q 590)

I will be thankful for any suggestions!

When is the best time to send Ph.D. applications for admission?
Definitely wait to send in your applications until after you've been doing research and clinicals. Mentioning this research (in detail) and writing about your experience in clinicals will be essential for a strong personal statement in Clinical Psych and Counseling Psych.

'

There is no need to send in applications early for PhD programs. We don't look at any of them until the deadline arrives. Then we meet as an admission committee, and nominate folks for fellowships, and choose candidates for assistantships.

Retake your GRE. Clinical Psych is perhaps the most competitive field (in terms of admissions) today.

You will also want your research supervisor and clinical supervisor to be able to write letters of rec for you. They will be unable to do so until they have worked with you.

So wait. An early arriving application does indeed just sit in a filing cabinet until the application deadline arrives, and all applications are in. We won't make any decisions about anything until we have them all.
Reply:Send your applications as early as possible, but make sure you include your plans for this fall - your research and clinical experience. Also, if possible, visit the schools and talk to some of the professors in these programs. This will give you extra points during the admissions process.

Good luck!
Reply:You should send your applications in as soon as possible. While most departments won't make hardline decisions until all applicants are in, faculty on the admissions committee definitely talk about applicants as soon as they come in.

Also, the sooner you apply, the more time your department has to nominate you for university wide fellowships. Since this type of fellowship is competed for across departments, each department generally likes to send in applicants as soon as possible to increase the likelihood that they will be able to get some students funded that way.

You should also make sure to include reference to the research you're going to undertake in the fall. that will likely help.

Also, just as some advice, really make sure the people writing your letters of recommendation are writing their letters and remembering to send them out in a timely fashion. I remember when I applied to grad school I sent out a lot of my applications really early but some of my letter writers waited to send their letters out until later and one faculty member came close to missing the deadline. You have to stay ontop of them about those things.

Good luck :)
Reply:The "rule" about having a better chance of getting into a program if you apply early is true for undergraduate programs and for professional programs -- but not for PhDs.

Most PhD programs don't look at any applications until after the deadline has passed -- then look at them all together. If you send in your application early, it is likely to sit in a filing cabinet until February or March.

The reason is simple. Professional schools and undergraduate programs have full time staff to work on admissions. For PhD programs, the decisions are usually made by a committee of professors who are pissed off that it is cutting into their research and wish to spend as little time as possible on the process.

In addition, taking an extra few months to send in your applications may give you enough time to impress your current professors.

I'd say send the applications in some time in October. In the mean time, I might think about taking a GRE prep course to see if you can improve your GRE scores.. Bringing them up another 100 points might make the difference between getting into a good program and getting into a great program.

How is Elizabeth Edwards' cancer INCURABLE? What about clinical trials? And look @ Lance Armstrong!?

Call me an idealistic fool, but ever since Elizabeth Edwards revealed her cancer recurrance was now "incurable", I've been confused. How can ANY cancer be called "incurable" in this day and age, where clinical trials are available everywhere? Also, what does "treatable but incurable" really mean? Will she still evetually die of her disease?

I know of folks who were told they were TERMINAL, so since they had nothing to lose, they enrolled in trials that carried some risk, but also a chance at cure. And some WERE cured! Is Elizabeth even considering enrolling in a trial? It seems she too, has nothing to lose, if her cancer truly is considered incurable by "regular" doctors (i.e. those not researching trials).

ALSO, what about Lance Armstrong? His testicular cancer metastisized to his liver, lungs and even his brain!! That basically wrote him off as DEAD -- but look at how many years he's been cancer-free!

Now you see why Elizabeth's statement doesn't make sense to me. Your thoughts?

How is Elizabeth Edwards' cancer INCURABLE? What about clinical trials? And look @ Lance Armstrong!?
Few cancers are truely "curable".

Some cancers spread faster than others, some grow faster than others, some do both.

Treatments attack cancers in 3 ways, surgery to remove cancerous tissue, chemotheratoy and radiation to kill cancerous cells, sometimes to slow growth, sometimes to reduce growth and sometimes to kill stray cells to help prevent recurrance.

All of these treatments have side effects.

With some cancers, the best we can hope for with treatments available is to slow growth of the cancer, given the side effects, this is then a balancing act between quantity and quality of life.

In my case, surgery , chemo and radiation were going to make me feel like cr@p for 6 months, but with good odds that I would have a long, cancer free life afterwards. I decided this was worthwhile.

If I knew that the same treatment may have given me a only a few months or years longer, with cancer never fully gone, I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Stage 4, metastatic breast cancer falls into the category of holding or reducing, but will always be hovering in the background. However, knowing this, Dr's will be monitoring regularly and treating whenever it flares up again.
Reply:on the CBS early show on monday 8-27-07 in the morning they are interviewing john kanzius who invented a machine that KILLS CANCER
Reply:If cancers (many kinds) were all curable,no one would be dying from it and thousands are so there are incurable ones. Pancreatic cancer is short term but few survive it but seems I heard a pancreas can be transplanted. Trouble is your life is spent on drugs for the duration of your life and can have very bad side effects. She is dealing with it as best she can.
Reply:Well it all depends on how much money you have and what you can afford to have done. When cancer metastasizes to bone it is almost impossible to treat and that is what has happenend in Elizabeth Edwards. In some cases it can be treated but very rarely.
Reply:I've had breast cancer twice. Currently I have no evidence of active disease, but I am not cured nor am I in remission - neither term applies. I did not have metastases as Ms. Edwards does. Those metastases may be able to be contained, even irradicated, but that is not a cure.

Clinical trials are just that - trials, and she may well be participating in one or more. Most of them are variations on current treatments that lead to minor improvements in survival or moderation of side effects. Clinical trials of therapies that lead to "cures" are rare, so rare that books are written about them. Example: "The Making of Herceptin" which isn't a cure but a significant improvement in the odds of survival for a longer period.

Her statement makes perfect sense to me.

I know nothing about Lance Armstrong or testicular cancer.
Reply:Lance Armstrong had testicular cancer. This form of cancer simply is more treatable and responds better to chemotherapy.

Mrs. Edwards has breast cancer that is widely metastatic. This is incurable, unfortunately.

Clinical trials are essentially tests of a new product, like a chemotherapy, that has newly been developed. There are no guarantees to efficacy. Despite major advances in cancer treatment, some cancers are quite difficult to treat. The truth of the matter is... if you are assigned to a clinical trial, you may be assigned to the portion of the trial that is giving the usual doses of chemotherapy. You could essentially be getting the "normal" treatment, not the "experimental" stuff. And not everybody qualifies for a trial. And there may be no new medication for the specific cancer being tested at the time of illness.

Anyway, your optimism is refreshing. However, the truth of the matter is, frankly, that Mrs. Edwards' cancer is incurable.
Reply:Every cancer is different, and gender affects the way people respond to the same cancer. Age also matters (a whole lot).

A cancer that recurs is a stubborn one, one that has probably already spread to other organs.

A cancer is incurable if it can't be reached by surgery - such as a cancer buried deep in the brain, or a spinal cancer (the spinal cord cannot be removed, and it doesn't tolerate being poked at too well). Cancers can also be incurable if they are too far advanced - advanced colon cancer for example is really awful. I worked as a nurse for 9 years and saw plenty of people die from cancer.

Clinical trials are not necessarily easy to get into. They usually only have room for 25 people at a time or so, and trials are strictly regulated by the FDA. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good, because a lot of con artists are willing to sell you snake oil and pretend it has already cured lots of cancer victims. Bad, because potentially useful drugs spend a long time in trials. People are going to die of something, and it's inevitable that some of them will die of cancer.
Reply:you never really get cured of cancer it just goes into remission. There is always a chance it can come back.
Reply:Just to give you an example... my mother had leukemia and bone marrow cancer. Basically, she had cancer of the blood and bone. Cancer of the blood and bone are not curable at least not in the type she had. Those kinds of cancers were inoperable, and she could not even have any kind of chemo or radiation that would have caused a cure in her condition. However, her condition was treatable with medications and blood transfusions but they were not given as a means for a cure but to help her live a little longer and better quality of life until the cancer took over and she passed away. So, you see some cancers are not curable. They can be treated for the duration of time a person can live up until the body cannot fight any longer and the person thus passes away. Hope I have helped you understand.

Can you tell me about being a psychologist?

I have a BS in biology and it's not what I want to do. I've been very confused about what career I want to be in but I do know I want to have a career and not just a "job". I want to be somebody and be ambitious and dedicate myself to something. The money doesn't matter but the profession does. So I started thinking about becoming a psychologist, like a clinical psychologist. The idea of research also interests me but I don't want it to be my main focus, not right away at least... I mean a life of research is what I'm trying to get away from right now as a science/biology major.

What are the different fields of clinical psychology are there and can you describe them?

Do you feel I will make a real difference in people's lives as well as humanity on a whole?

Can you tell me about being a psychologist?
Look up psychology on Wikipedia for a general description of different fields of psychology. You can also go the APA website (www.apa.org) for more info as well.

And yes, psychologists can make a real difference, which is very fulfilling to them.
Reply:Psychology school is a waste of money. You spend tons of money to learn how to say "Mhmmm... I understand. Tell me more." and "How do you feel about that?"
Reply:It sounds like Luke's dad did waste a lot of money, because he did not learn anything.

There is a lot of studying to do and earn your PhD then an internship before you join a group or practice. You can do a lot of good and earn a good living at the same time.

Make sure the school is APA rated.

Can I get a PhD that will let me do all of this?

I want to be a psychologist and be able to do clinical psychology and research psychology in the fields of personality, psychopharmacology, cognitive science, and perhaps behavioral neuroscience. Can I get a PhD that will let me do all of this, or do I have to narrow down my interests?

Can I get a PhD that will let me do all of this?
The Ph.D. can do a lot of things. You can complete the degree in one of the major areas, and your further specialization can come from there. There is excellent information on the websites of programs that are accredited by the American Psychological Association because the APA has specific requirements for the information that is posted. Also, APA publishes an excellent reference book called "Graduate Study in Psychology." APA is discouraging excessive specialization before the doctorate.
Reply:this is one of those questions that you should ask an advisor because they're more likely able to tell you more information than anyone on yahoo answers can
Reply:I hate to say this, but there's a very good chance that you're going to have to narrow down your interests. Question...are you in college/university right now?

I've been going through a similar thing with anthropology. I wish I could study all the fields associated with that major (from linguistics to archaeology to bio anthro), but I'm having to pick and choose which ones to leave out and that drives me nuts.

It's possible to get degress in each of those fields, but not without a lot of hard work and time. I haven't heard of someone getting one PhD that covers all those fields, so you're going to have to pick the one field that interests you the most and go ahead with that.

Does anyone know anything about the PhD program at the CA. School of Professional Psychology?

I am very interested in the PhD program in clinical psychology at the CA. School of Professional Psychology in san diego. i was wondering if anybody knew anything about the programs reputation and if it is a valid option for a Psych student looking to get equal trainining in both the clinical and research aspects of clinical psychology?

Should space research be redirected to the preservation of humanity?

The case has been made for accidents and violent crimes being the products of an energy deficit (1), that is a decline in Daniel Atkinson energy charge which is reflected in the tissue pH (2). It might be instructive to consider the problem very broadly in terms of the entropy paradox confounding the second law of thermodynamics.

The second law states that systems always progress from states of lower to states of higher entropy or more specifically never progressing from states of higher to states of lower entropy, entropy being a measure of the degree of disorder in a system. Living organisms are said to progress from states of higher to states of lower entropy in violation of the second law thereby creating an entropy paradox. Fred Adams, popular science writer and Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan, claims that the second law is not violated by living organisms for the universe as a whole still progresses to a state of higher entropy. In his book, "The Road to Reality", Sir Roger Penrose states that the entropy paradox is merely the delay in the inevitable progression to a state of higher entropy with ageing and death, the delay being cause by the ability of organisms to generatetheir own energy from from the consumption of nutrients and oxygen.

If one accepts Sir Roger's explanation of the entropy paradox does that not mean that the sun, earth and all the other planets must also be living organisms? James Lovelock has proposed just that in his Gaia hypothesis which has been well received certainly in the popular science press. As Sir Roger points out the sun is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the earth transmitting as much energy to earth in the form of high energy bosons or photons in sunlight and receiving an equal amount back in a larger number of lower energy bosons (infrared waves) during the day and night. The inference is that the sun, earth and the planets all generate their own energy, the sun doing so by nuclear fusion of hydrogen.

Humanity may be viewed as a giant organism populating an even larger organism, Gaia. In which case is the energy all of humanity generates progressing to a state of higher or lower entropy? That would seem to depend upon whether one considers all of humanity to be a thriving infant or an ageing adult. James Lovelock's accounting of the state of Gaia in his most recent book, "The Revenge of Gaia", leaves little doubt that humanity is an ageing adult. In which case global injury and violence may be a direct consequence of it the brain being most sensitive to a decline in energy charge as clinical experience of the critically ill has established.

Perhaps one should take Fred Adams's view of entropy and conclude that humanity is progressing to a higher entropy state as a whole but exhibiting different degrees of entropy paradox in different communities and segments within those communities. In which case human conduct and energy charge are intimately related and all of the factors that might compromise the energy charge of all of humanity. These include the rapid growth in the population, the failure to meet all nutient demands, the failure to provide the gaseous environment conducive to optimizing oxidative phosphorylation, and the environmental toxins inhibiting oxidative phosporylation.

Leplace determinism allows causes of past events to be determined and future events to be predictive with reasonable degrees of statistical confidence provided the initial conditions can be defined. The methodology has been refined for determining events at the Big Bang. It might be constructive to construct models with the future of humanity in mind. I doubt that the model will include global warming, nuclear war or any of the other Armageddon scenarios depicted in the popular press and entertainment industry.

Should space research be redirected to the preservation of humanity?
Yes indeed.First we must wise up and learn how to feed ourselves and protect ourselves without damaging this medium in which we live.Once that initial hump is cleared we can then work on improving the rest of the planet...tom science
Reply:I think that the correct way out of the chaos the human species seems to be going towards, with the rest of the world with it, is not through a door to space but through a change in the human species.

most organisms adapt when in response to external change, or are exterminated.

the human species will soon have the technology to modify living organisms.

what I suggest is to start planning an intensive modification of ourselves, to adapt to the conditions that we created, or to achieve a better balance with nature.

Therefore I think that the way out of this situation lies within the fields of biotechnology, ecology and social science and not with space research.

by the way' if the human species "decides" to select this option the end result will be that we/our descendants will not be human anymore.
Reply:Treat others as you would like to be treated.

That may be hard at times, like when they are killing all of your family members and attacking you. But they do have hearts and are obviously able to set their mind so if we could give them something great to set their mind on and to teach their children then the warring will stop. Put money on teaching children.

I saw this site. It tells of a way to change the heart and mind.

Reply:Very good question. i agree with you.

First time i felt there should some option to select good question as well. If so i would have selected this one.
Reply:Err, no.

You should read Penrose' book more carefully before leaping to conclusions.

Entropy is the tendency of a system to spread available energy over the maximum number of microstates. Life on earth is possible because energy comes from the sun in a small number of microstates - a small number of high energy photons - and leaves as a large number of low energy (infra red or radio) photons.

Entropy does not imply life.
Reply:No, I'd have to disagree with those statements of entropy to energy vs applied to "life". Living things are dependent on energy, true, but can also find various alternatives.

Human life will follow ecological paths. When a species outweighs its available resources, it will find balance...the hard way. Unfortunately certain countries are breeding much faster than can be sustained, and other countries, like the U.S. consume far more than can be sustained. A combination of both is certainly not good. Perhaps they are equating energy entropy to the resources I'm talking about, but even that won't immediately destroy all life, it will just limit the amount of life to the amount of available resources.

But to answer the question more directly....space science currently does more for the help of humanity because it helps all the other sciences in ways never before available. Agriculture, Biology, Meteorology, materials research, new medicines, city planning, seismology, oceanography, etc... They all have had huge leaps of benefit directly from space science research.

And at least within the USA, Welfare alone receives 3 times the amount of money that NASA receives annually (45 billion to Welfare, and 16 billion to NASA).

Finding ecological balance will be the only way we will prevent the human race from outstripping its resources, regardless of the entropy of energy. And the more a space science program defines the parameters that can sustain us, the closer we'll understand the "tipping" point, but also finding ways to produce more energy/resources to prevent it from happening.

And should we be able to, perhaps we can start colozing other places (certainly slowly at first) but those places will start with a very careful ecological balance and resource utilization, which might just help us all back on Earth.

Great question. Thanks for letting me throw my two cents in.

When Should I Apply for a Job?

I am graduating in December. When should I start looking and applying for a job? I want to go straight to the work environment as soon as I graduate.

Also, how would you determine your salary, as most of the time employers do not post their salary offers.

Thanks.

Just FYI if it gives some clues; I'm a biology major, looking for a job in a hospital setting, such as clinical microbiologist, research associate, or maybe something like ER Coordinator.

When Should I Apply for a Job?
You have gone to school for four years and you don't know the starting salary for your field? White tiger!
Reply:well in my experience you generally don't get a job in the field you studied for, but i would start applying at least a month before graduation.
Reply:I applied for jobs pretty much the last 2/3rds of my final semester at college. I probably applied for 100 jobs on the internet, and was offered around a dozen interviews

I got the job I am at now about 4 days after graduation and I started working a week after that.
Reply:You should start networking for a job like, the day you are born. Talk to as many people as you can in your industry. It really is "who you know" backed up by "what you know". Pass your resume around and let people know you are looking for a job whenever you have time. You may want to avoid applying for actual job postings until it gets closer to graduation times. Most employers want you to start ASAP and you will still be in school! As for salary, I am not in healthcare, but I know there is information on the internet that can tell you the low, high, and average salaries for given positions in given areas of the country. I acutally think Yahoo may do it. Good luck!

Dentist Recommendation for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

I currently do not have dental insurance (though I do have BlueCross BlueShield Health Insurance) and feel that I will need to have my wisdom teeth removed in the near future. I am terrified of clinical research studies and would like to find a nice dentist in the Austin area to remove them for me. I realize there will be cost involved, but would love to get a general ballpark figure of the cost.

Does anyone have experience with this? I have searched online all morning with no real helpful results. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Dentist Recommendation for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Many times if you see an oral surgeon then your health insurance will pay on it. You'll have to go for an evaluation to find out. Depending on where you live in the U.S. it will range approximately $1,000 - $1600 for an oral surgeon to do it.
Reply:A dentist can do it, or an oral surgeon. A dentist will just use a general anesthesia on you so you'll be conscious for the proceedure which (I would think) could be traumatizing. I opted for an oral surgeon because I had insurance to cover it. It's a much more expensive option, but they put you out completely so you don't have to be awake for the worst of it.
Reply:Generally this procedure runs around $800-$1200 depending on the quality of the oral surgeon.
Reply:1. Oral surgeons running clinical research trials are the best in their field. The "research aspect" of your surgery will most likely involve assessing pre-operative conditions, and require some sort of follow up i.e. a painless visit or two after the teeth are extracted, or involve pain relief methods after extraction (after anesthesia has worn off). In the second case, if you still have pain, then report that and you will be given something that will relieve any pain. Either way, the research aspect is really very minimal involving either very simple data collection, or at the greatest, alternative pain medications.

2. Often, if your wisdom teeth are completely impacted, meaning that no tooth is visible in the mouth, then your medical insurance may cover extractions.

3. Since you are in Austin, contact a dental school. Oral surgery residents and/or faculty are responsible for wisdom tooth extractions (not dental students). These folks have a lot of training.

Importance of demonstrating leadership for medical school?

Sup guys, I've been reading on activities one should participate in during undergrad. Being a premed myself, I understand the importance of research experience, clinical volunteering, gpa/mcat etc.

However, the stuff Ive read never mentions much about leadership roles. How important is leadership in applying to medical school? It was one of the most important factors EC-wise for getting into undergrad, so I would assume its important as well for medical school.

Any ideas, answers, experience?

Importance of demonstrating leadership for medical school?
Speaking from a long medical career - not as a physician, but as a Navy Corpsman...

Part of college acceptance (or job interviews) is sales and marketing. That means you have to package it well - marketing and you have to present it well - sales.

Before I continue, as a general principle, always take the hard jobs. You will learn a lot and get some recognition as a side effect.

All the accomplishments don't mean a thing unless the presentation is well-polished. Go to Linked In and look at some of the layouts there. Email me if you want my link. These are people that have been in the workforce for 10+ years. They know how to present their qualifications in the best light.

As to the admission process, I will leave that to the experts.

Last thing...

It's nice to have an "agent." Ideally, you want someone that is already in the medical school to vouch for you.

Aloha.
Reply:My nephew just got into med school with very little in "leadership" EC. He had good grades, was very heavy on research experience ... and did lots of non-team sports and music. He skis, kayaks, and plays guitar as a chick-magnet.

It's easy to spot those who are in an activity for the points and those who really like it. If you aren't comfortable with the whole "leadership" thing ... Just do what you truly enjoy and it will show in an interview.

What no longer works is the "grind" ... the 4.0 student with no human side, no recreation, no sense of fun. They made very poor doctors.
