I am so oblivious with graduate and undergraduate, and M.A, and M.S. college jargon. I don't mean to sound stupid, but I really am clueless, can someone give me details on what courses and majors or whatever I need to take to get a PHD in Clinical Psychology? I tried researching it online, but like I said I have no idea what graduate and undergraduate, etc. ,etc. means.
What exactly do I need to do for a PHD in Clinical Psychology?
Do not ever say that you are stupid or feel stupid for not knowing all of this college lingo. It is quite confusing, especially if you're like me, a first generation college student without the help of your parents to guide you with all of the jargon.
What you should know about obtaining a degree in clinical psychology is that it goes in steps. There is a long process of education that one needs to go through first, but the end result and payoff is worth the years of education necessary to obtain the degree and license. First, you will need to apply to and gain admission to college as an undergraduate student. Here you will obtain a bachelors of art or science degree in psychology. This will take you a minimum of eight semesters or 4 years of college. After this you will apply to graduate school where you work on your Ph.D in clinical psychology. When you have finished the necessary course work and thesis (generally 2-3 years of courses), you will awarded your Masters in psychology. When you finish the remaining course work, internships, and dissertation, you will be awarded your Ph.D in clinical psychology. You will then need to take your board exam and obtain your license to practice. All together, it will take you about 8-10 years to become a licensed clinical psychologist.
Reply:Speaking in US terms:
You will get your undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science OR Bachelor of Arts) in a field...doesn't necessarily have to be Psychology, but that would help for studies after the undergraduate program.
You will then get your Master's Degree in a field. Again, it's usually Psychology, but it doesn't have to be.
Then you will apply for a PhD program in Psychology.
You will need to work closely with an advisor/counselor to make sure that you are completing the rquired classes to be able to move from degree to degree with no problems.
