I'm doing research into clinical psych programs . I'm thinking of applying to Philips Graduate Institute in Encino California but does anyone know of an even better school in the LA area? And can anyone give me an estimate on tuition for this type of degree? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Does it matter which school one receives there PsyD in Clinical psych? As long as its APA acreditated?
Alliant University is probably a better choice if you really want to go PsyD. That used to be known as the California School of Professional Psychology. The fact that I have not heard of your school (not to be a snob) makes me think it probably isn't too great. It certainly isn't APA accredited.
In general, all PsyD programs are very expensive. Like 20-30K a year. PhD programs are much cheaper and tend to be more respected. That is not to say that PsyD programs are not good. But, if you go PsyD, try to go to a APA accredited program and, best of all, go to a program that is affiliated with a regular university.
So, in CA, all universities with accredited PsyD programs are Pacific Graduate School of Psychology/Stanford University Medical School Consortium, Pepperdine University, Biola University, University of La Verne, Azusa Pacific University, Fuller Theological Seminary (Fuller Graduate School), and John F. Kennedy University. Those schools are in established colleges.
Free standing professional schools, that focus just on psych, include Alliant International University and Argosy University. They are still accredited by the APA so would be ok.
I suggest trying to go for schools at universities and then the free standing schools.
Reply:I don't know about schools in California or costs. I do know that if you get a degree from a school that does not have APA accreditation, it is all but worthless. If you want to be a clinician, it has to be APA. Ask your professors.
*I will make a pitch for my alma mater, the University of Nevada, Reno -- close to California. Many people get out of state tuition waived. I wasn't in the clinical program, but I know it's good.
